Aligned with InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards (PDF), the PPAT® assessment measures the instructional capability of teacher candidates before receiving a license. The assessment consists of four tasks — one formative and three summative. Each task requires written commentary and submission of artifacts. A video is required for Task 4. The tasks are described below, and a requirements document and rubric document have been provided for each.

The requirements document contains the activities and guiding prompts for each task, the standards and indicators measured by each task, and detailed instructions to follow when submitting responses.

The rubric document contains the four task-specific rubrics that are used to evaluate the elements of the evidence you provide.

Guidance for Completing the PPAT Assessment in a Virtual Learning Environment or Hybrid Model (PDF) if you are impacted by COVID-19 restrictions that do not permit face-to-face communication with students.

While student teaching, you should collect multiple artifacts and videos in case you need to resubmit a task(s).

Task 1: Knowledge of Students and the Learning Environment

In this formative task, completed during the first weeks of student teaching, you demonstrate the knowledge and skills that pertain to your understanding of your assigned classroom. The task asks you to provide evidence in regard to your students, the school and the community, and to identify implications of these factors on instruction and student learning. It is important to take the time to understand the school culture to avoid unintended biases or stereotyping when responding to the prompts in this exercise. The Instructional and Support Resources Chart, the Contextual Factors Chart, a completed Getting to Know Your Students document, and a document that demonstrates communication with students' families are the four required artifacts for this task.
