An Education Leader on Preparing Today’s Learners for an Optimistic Future

Preparing today’s generation of learners to redesign the future first requires them to imagine all they can achieve by working on and testing their capabilities, explains ETS Board of Trustees Member Dr. Earl Lewis. In a recent conversation with Dr. Lewis, we discuss the powerful influence of role models in helping learners realize their potential and his own personal experience and role models throughout his educational journey. After learning of the sacrifices his grandmother made to ensure her children had access to quality education, Dr. Lewis adamantly pursued his education and remained open to every experience he encountered. Seeing the drastic changes between his generation and today’s young students, Dr. Lewis believes that if colleges and universities can rededicate themselves to their communities, their students will be well-equipped to reach their possibilities in undergrad and beyond. An Expert’s Experience in Access for Bilingual and Low-Income Learners

Image
Exposing learners to the opportunities that lie ahead begins with establishing equitable learning environments and exposing them to a myriad of possibilities. For Dr. Patricia Gándara, ETS Board of Trustees Member, Research Professor of Education in the School of Education and Information Sciences at UCLA and Co-Director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA, discovering what was possible began with exploring educational opportunities outside of what she was exposed to growing up. After individuals in her school and local community took time to contribute to her personal and academic development, Dr. Gándara was able to progress in her learning journey and serve as a role model for not only the next generation of English-language learners, but for peers who came from similar backgrounds. As an advocate for bilingual learners, Dr. Gándara has encouraged these students to believe in and voice their perspectives on the world and to serve as mentors for others to see the possibilities availa...

A More Equitable Approach to Student Socioeconomic Status Measurement

Efforts to promote equity and ensure opportunity for all learners in the United States requires a deeper understanding of how the supports provided to students outside of school influence learning and how schools can compensate for lack of such supports among some students. The relationship between students’ academic success and the resources available to them in their homes and communities has long been a topic of interest to education policymakers and researchers. Researchers often use socioeconomic status (SES) to examine influences on student learning. Measures of SES typically include information about student and family background. Although SES can be measured in a variety of ways, researchers have largely settled on three components as the basis for student SES measurement: parental education, parental occupation, and family income. This student SES information is often collected as part of the survey questionnaires that are paired with large-scale assessments (LSAs), providing ...

Pursuing What’s Possible: Equitable Learning Journeys

Image
Last year was filled with tremendous challenges that forced the world of education to continually pivot and adapt. It also made vividly clear that ETS’s mission – to advance quality and equity in education by providing fair and valid assessments, research and related services – has never been more critical. Now is the time for us to act with purpose and ask ourselves, “what’s necessary,” and, “what’s possible?” For all the progress we’re making in this world, many people are still left behind, facing inequities in education, housing, finance, food and more. As a society, we must do everything we can to address these inequities because it’s the right thing to do. If successful, we’ll have a much better world to live in for ourselves, our children and generations to come. At ETS , we believe the journey to those possibilities starts with learning. Therefore, now is the time to engage our community of learners, educators, parents and leaders like never before in the pursuit of creating mo...

ETS tops $2.4 million in donations to Lawrence Township Public Schools

T his year, Educational Testing Service ( ETS ) donated $92,000 to the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) to support local public-school students and schools. This brings ETS’s overall funding to the LTEF to $2,434,000 since 1993. In addition, ETS has been a strong financial supporter of the Lawrence Township Public Schools (LTPS) since 1981, according to a statement provided by LTEF. “The LTEF is extremely grateful for its partnership with ETS and the organization’s success is a direct result of the generous annual donations that make it possible for the LTEF to achieve its mission,” Karen Faiman, executive director of the LTEF, said in the statement. The LTEF is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to support projects and programs within LTPS that foster excellence, creativity, and achievement in education. Just this spring, LTEF surpassed 1,000 grants funded in LTPS, with more than $4.2 million invested in these projects and programs, according to the statement. ETS...

Ignoring Key Data Points Can Make or Break Holistic Admissions

Graduate programs striving to admit the most qualified and diverse classes can do so by ensuring their admissions review processes consider insightful and trusted metrics like GRE General Test scores. Waiving the only common, objective measure in a holistic review process will inherently make the process less fair and equitable as the likelihood of implicit bias increases. Instead, admissions decision makers have an obligation in holistically reviewing applicants to consider a multitude of variables, including ones that reliably indicate an applicant’s readiness for succeeding at graduate-level work. Recently, there have been studies suggesting that not too much weight should be placed on GRE scores. The Educational Testing Service agrees with this premise, as the scores do not and cannot offer insight about all qualities that are important in predicting academic success or in confirming undergraduate achievement. Unfortunately, though, these studies have sometimes been misunders...

We believe in the life-changing power of learning

We’re driven by a vision of what’s possible when all people can improve their lives through education and learning. Explore more about our commitment to advance equity and opportunity through everything we do. As a research organization, it is important to define that which we seek to understand. We believe an equitable learning journey makes learning more accessible and ensures that who you are and where you come from doesn’t impact your options to learn and fulfill your dreams. It is an open-ended path that can uncover possibilities and expand experiences by accommodating and accounting for personal, social and environmental circumstances. Creating more equitable learning journeys for more people is a difficult but necessary endeavor, and we at ETS feel a shared responsibility with learners, educators and our partners in education to strive for this goal. We will work to bring clarity and understanding to the roadblocks that inhibit equitable learning journeys so we can address the m...

Webinar Calls on K-12, Higher Education to Promote Civic Learning and Engagement

As misinformation and government-related conspiracy theories continue to divide the nation, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the Educating for American Democracy initiative co-hosted a webinar on Tuesday to discuss the need to promote civic readiness within the K-12 education system. The “fragility of our democracy” was made evident by the events of Jan. 6 at the United States Capitol, which was incited by rhetoric around election fraud, according to Harvard University’s James Bryant Conant University Professor Dr. Danielle Allen. As misinformation and government-related conspiracy theories continue to divide the nation, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the Educating for American Democracy initiative co-hosted a webinar on Tuesday to discuss the need to promote civic readiness within the K-12 education system. The event, “Monitoring Civic Learning Opportunities and Outcomes: State of the Field and Future Directions,” noted inadequate support for civics education from...
